The Checklist every non-designer should have!

Did you ever asked yourself “How do I know the files I should receive from my designer”? Well, thinking about clients that don’t have knowledge about technical files, I decided to do this easy checklist to help. Talk to your designer, about the items, prices, etc… and after finishing the logo design you will know what to expect to receive.

In this checklist, I decided to separate the items into two different lists:

  1. Checklist Minimal Items – This one is the most simple file you must have if you want to have the flexibility to use your logo well.
  2. Checklist Advance Items – This is the one I always recommend because you will be able to do whatever you need and if you decide to change something, or use it in different formats, etc…
  3. Bonus: How to have a strong brand.

TIP: Talk to the designer and ask everything, to be sure you both are on the same page.

Checklist: Minimal Items

Minimum items that you must receive:

  • Logo in vertical format
  • Logo in horizontal format
  • Outlined version one color
  • Separately icon
  • Separately business name
  • Copyrights (Just essential copyright is enough)
  • Designer contact (in case you need some extra help or new items)

All files must be in these specifications for each one:

  • .PNG File at least 2500px – with transparent background
  • Universal Vector File – .EPS file, or .SVG file
  • Universal vector file editable text – .PDF

Checklist: Advance Items

This is the list of items that I recommend:

  • Logo in vertical format
  • Logo in horizontal format
  • Outlined version one color
  • Separately icon
  • Separately business name
  • Copyrights (Just basic copyright is enough)
  • Designer contact (in case you need some extra help or new items)
  • Font used (name or file – ask your designer how it works)
  • Color Palette
  • Different icons
  • Design Pack (Assets and patterns)
  • Logo color variation
  • Business card
  • Email Signature

All files above must be in these specifications for each one:

  • .PNG File at least 2500px – with transparent background
  • Universal Vector File – .EPS file, or .SVG file
  • Universal vector file editable text – .PDF
  • Source file (Affinity Designer, Illustrator, Corel Draw, etc… and keep with you in case you need it).

BONUS:

If you are going ahead with the Advance Items, request a Brandy Identity, so you can have all the brand designs in one PDF file, and if you need to do something new with a different designer, you just send the Brand Identity PDF file and request to follow your identity. Brand Identity is very important to maintain a strong design consistency for your brand. You can download here an example of Brand Identity that I deliver to my clients.

Each designer uses different software, ask about the one your designer currently uses. I use Affinity Designer. It’s essential to have a logo vertical and horizontal, outlined version in one color, separately icon and business name, because you can use it in different situations. Also, having different elements you have multiple options of how to use your logo and everything keeps the same consistency. See images below:

Vertical Logo, separately icon and Pattern applied.
Outlined horizontal Logo all-black color and also colored.

Your brand is very important, your business is something I’m sure you are working hard to succeed, so before you start working with a designer, make sure both are on the same page. If you are interested in the packages I offer, you can check them out here.

Thank you for reading and I see you in the next post, bye bye 😀
